About Nine Across

What we make

An anagram solver, a word unscrambler, a Wordle solver, a codeword solver, a crossword letter solver, a random word generator, word lists, an unlimited word game, and daily hints for Wordle, Connections and Strands. Everything is free and needs no account.

Where the words come from

Our list has about 110,000 words and is built from SCOWL, an open project that publishes English word lists by dialect and by how common each word is. We use the British English lists and remove American-only spellings, so colour is in and color is out.

It is a general dictionary, not the official Scrabble dictionary. A very rare Scrabble word may be missing, so check a disputed word against your game's own rules.

Where the daily answers and hints come from

Each day's answers come from the public puzzle data. The hints are ours. We write them from the answer itself: its vowels, its letters, the ends of the word, a rhyme. We do not copy other sites' hints.

The best starting words page is our own calculation. We tested every five-letter word in our list as a first guess against 2,011 common answers and counted how many were left afterwards.

Who we are

Nine Across is an independent site. Wordle, Connections and Strands belong to The New York Times Company, and we have no connection with them.

How the site is paid for

Adverts. We keep them clear of the tools, and never between your letters and your results.
