How to play
Type a word and press Enter. Every tile changes: green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is a letter that is in the word but elsewhere, and grey is a letter that is not in the word at all. You have six guesses.
Use the first guess to test common letters, then use the colours to narrow it down. If you are stuck partway through the daily New York Times puzzle, our solver will list every word still possible, and the best starting words page ranks openers by how many answers they leave.

Is there a five letter word game with no daily limit?
This is one. Five Across gives you as many rounds as you like, with words of four to seven letters, and there is also a daily puzzle if you want one.
How do I play?
Guess the hidden word in six tries. After each guess every tile changes: green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the word.
Is this the daily game from the New York Times?
No. Five Across is our own game with its own word list. It works on the same guessing idea as the daily puzzle, but it is not connected to it. If you want help with the New York Times puzzle, see our hints and solver pages.
Can I play the daily puzzle here?
Yes. Choose Daily puzzle and everyone gets the same word for the day. It changes at midnight UK time, and you get one attempt, saved on your device.
What is hard mode?
Hard mode makes you reuse every clue you have found. Green letters must stay in place and yellow letters must appear in your next guess.
Does it work without colour?
Yes. Each tile carries a small mark as well as a colour: a square for right place, a ring for wrong place and a dash for not in the word.
Are my stats saved?
On your own device only. We never see them. Clearing your browser data clears them.
Which words does it use?
Answers are common British English words with no plurals. Guesses can be any word in our list of 110,000, so an unusual word is usually accepted.
