How a codeword grid works
In a codeword, every letter of the alphabet has a number from 1 to 26. Each cell in the grid shows that number, so the same number always means the same letter and two different numbers never mean the same letter.
That is the whole trick for solving by pattern. A word whose cells read 1 2 3 3 4 has a double letter in the middle and five different letters overall. Very few words fit, and once you place one, every matching number in the grid fills in with it.
Start with the words that have the most repeated numbers or the most letters filled in. Those have the fewest candidates.
Questions, answered briefly
How do I use the codeword solver?
Type the numbers from one word in your grid, with a space between each. If you know what a number stands for, add it in the known box as 3=E. The solver lists every word whose repeated numbers match repeated letters and whose different numbers are different letters.
What does the pattern 1 2 3 3 4 mean?
Five letters where the third and fourth are the same letter, and every other cell is a different letter. Words like BUFFS, APPLE and SILLY have that shape.
Can I include letters I already know?
Yes. Type them straight into the pattern, for example c 2 3 3 e, or list the number they stand for in the known box.
What if I only know some of the cells?
Use a question mark for any cell you have no clue about. It will match any letter.
Why does it show no result?
Either a number is wrong, or the answer is not in our list. Codeword answers are ordinary words, so check each repeated number first.
Does it work for any length?
Any length from 2 to 15 cells.
