Tips for solving Connections

Read all sixteen words before you touch anything. Most puzzles hide a word that fits two groups, and that word is usually the trap.

Start with the group where you can spot four words that belong together and no fifth candidate. If you have five, hold off and solve the other groups first, because one of the five is a red herring for somewhere else.

When the game says you are one away, swap a single word rather than starting again. You already have three right.

Questions, answered briefly

What are the hints for today's Connections?

For puzzle 1206 (29 September): Yellow is the easiest group and purple the hardest. One yellow word is HIDDEN. The other hints reveal the four category themes one at a time, yellow first.

Which Connections group should I solve first?

Yellow is meant to be the easiest and purple the hardest, so start with the group you feel surest about. Solving a group also removes its four words from the grid, which helps with the rest.

What do the Connections colours mean?

They show difficulty. Yellow is the most straightforward, then green, then blue, and purple is the trickiest and often involves wordplay.

Can I check my groups without opening the answer?

Yes. Below the hints is today's grid. Tap four words and press Check, and it tells you if they are a group, one word away, or not a group. Each group also has a nudge, a category step and a words step, so you can take exactly as much help as you want.

How many mistakes do I get?

Four. A wrong guess costs one mistake, and Connections tells you when you are one word away.

When does Connections change?

A new puzzle appears at midnight in your own time zone. Our hints are usually up by the morning.
