What this solver does, and what it doesn't
Most crossword help sites take a clue and look it up. We work from the other end. You tell us the pattern the grid has already given you, and we list every word that fits it. When the crossing letters are strong, that is often quicker than the clue.
We don't have the clue itself. If a clue is stumping you and you have two or three letters from crossing answers, this is the tool. If you have none, solve a crossing clue first.
Anagram indicators in cryptic clues
In a cryptic clue, a word that suggests disorder next to a group of letters usually means "rearrange these". Common ones include:
mixed, broken, wild, crazy, shuffled, scrambled, confused, awkward, out, off, badly, poor, loose, drunk, mad, novel, fresh, rebuilt, reformed, reworked, rearranged, upset, wrong, twisted, bent, cooked, stewed, tossed.
When you spot one, copy the letters it points at into the anagram solver, and the answer is usually the word of the right length.
Questions, answered briefly
Can you solve a crossword clue?
Not by clue. We do not hold a clue database. What we do is find every word that fits the letters you already have, which is the second half of solving any crossword clue once you know the pattern.
How do I search with missing letters?
Type the letters you have and a question mark for each gap. For a seven letter answer with S first and E fourth, type S??E???. Every matching word appears.
How do I solve a cryptic crossword anagram?
Take the letters the clue tells you to rearrange and put them in the anagram solver. If the answer's length is given, the unscrambler shows only words of that length.
Which words does it know?
A British English list of about 110,000 words. Proper nouns, multi word answers and phrases are not included.
Is it free?
